28 Apr Mastermind
Hey! Jordan Roscoe here, welcome to The Journeyman Entrepreneur blog. If you’re just joining me, thanks for stopping by! If you missed yesterday’s installment of Motivation Monday, check it out here. As we discussed yesterday, it’s critically important to analyze our sources of information so we can actively dismiss all the B.S, and acknowledge that it’s only intended to create panic and fear. Unfortunately, fear and panic are big sellers and major networks capitalize by delivering negativity compounded over and over agin. Think about it, if you were to turn on the local news right now, how inspired would you be to go out and conquer the day after listening for just 5 minutes… Unless it’s a weather report that says today is going to be beautiful, chances are you’re being served their favorite menu item, hysteria. It’s sad, but selling fear is an extremely lucrative business.
Fortunately, I’ve discovered a brilliant way to rise above all the nonsense, naysayers, and negativity. It’s not a new technique and I certainly did come up with it. In fact, people have been utilizing this method to receive and provide valuable information for a very long time. At a small level, I would venture to say that most of us have even experienced this method for ourselves back when we were in school. I’m talking about a “Mastermind”. Back in 1925, author Napoleon Hill coined the phrase in his book The Law of Success and then later expanded on the topic in his 1937 release of Think and Grow Rich. So what exactly is a mastermind? In Napoleon Hill’s words it’s, “The coordination of knowledge and effort of two or more people, who work toward a definite purpose, in the spirit of harmony.” “No two minds ever come together without thereby creating a third, invisible intangible force, which may be likened to a third mind [the master mind].” In other words, it’s a group of two or more people that come together in an alliance for an exchange of information to learn and support the skills, knowledge, and experiences of its members.
Long before Napoleon Hill’s study of the ultra-successful and coining the phrase “mastermind”, historic figures like Benjamin Franklin and Henry Ford utilized mastermind groups and leveraged the knowledge of their peers which helped lead them to their impressive levels of success. Think about the brainstorming activities you did in school, if everyone participated, the group was widely successful in producing the desired result. Each student brought forth their own perspective and collectively a common goal was reached efficiently. Mastermind groups are very similar in the professional sector. I’ve been exposed to a few and I can definitely speak to their significance. In early 2015, I made a lousy attempt to get rich quickly in real estate by wholesaling properties in the greater Baltimore area. I quickly realized that anything involving real estate requires patience and a strong network to successfully buy and sell investment properties. Recognizing I was completely out of my league, a little research led me to MAREIA (mid-Atlantic real estate investors association).
In my short time attending meetings with MAREIA, it became abundantly apparent that the most successful people in the business were constantly surrounding themselves with other industry professionals in different but similar niches. The meetings always focused on a central topic, however, the members were able to pitch their deals at designated times and the administrators implemented creative activities to reinforce the importance of collaboration and networking. Even though I didn’t wind up pursuing a career of real estate investing (yet), I learned so much from the group and the amount of information being freely exchanged was invaluable. Now, not all masterminds are free. Some even have qualifying criteria for admission or have limited capacities. I am fortunate to have qualified for ENTRE Institute’s “Inner Circle” mastermind. Last night was my first experience with that group and I was blown away. The group meets via zoom twice a month for two hours, and the second meeting is usually focused on a guest presenter that is not affiliated with ENTRE. Last night’s speaker happened to be a real estate investor specializing in low entry cost turn-key rental properties. He was very open and responsive to specific questions and shared a ton of his knowledge and resources.
I’m very excited to attend more sessions and continue expanding my sources of information. Throughout this journey, I want to learn above all. I’ve ignored the importance of education for so long, and now I’m truly hungry to learn new and exciting things. Stick with me and I’ll share with you some of the strategies I am using to help leave my 9-5 and achieve freedom of time, and financial security!
Also, I’ve officially launched my YouTube channel (The Journeyman Entrepreneur). It’s nothing earth-shattering but it’s a step in the right direction. I look forward to aiding this blog with video content and I encourage your suggestions and feedback! You can see my very first video here!
Be masterful today!
Cheers to your success!
